Please don’t diagnose me. Don’t diagnose anyone. I’ve already been diagnosed by people who have medical degrees and are willing to disclose their names.
I never said I got better. I have dealt with the emotional aspects that caused my depression, but the bad chemistry lingers. If I’m lucky, I am able to manage my symptoms. It would be more accurate to say that I can go from bad to less bad.
I have been living with this for many years. I have had the therapy. I take the pills. And I’m gonna give you a slight eye roll on the holistic remedies and positive thinking. “Hey man, cheer up! Think positive! And take this holistic llama semen that my aunt said helped her!”
Clinical depression comes in many varieties and has a broad spectrum of severity. Feeling like dying, hating life, and cutting wrists are not required to have persistent low moods and improper serotonin levels. And you don’t actually know if I have had any of those thoughts.
This isn’t a damned contest. Just because some people might have a more severe case of depression does not invalidate everyone else’s diagnosis. I suppose you think you are an ally for the depressed people out there. But it kinda scares me that you might tell someone that they aren’t properly depressed and they should quit being so dramatic. I’m not sure you realize how potentially dangerous that is. It’s very hard for many people to seek help. If you tell someone they don’t need help when they actually do… it could have serious consequences.
Your food for thought sort of makes my stomach turn.

This is the greatest thing I have ever seen. People do not understand that mental illnesses, such as depression, are actual chemical imbalances in your body. They are not brought on by choice. My dad was diagnosed with depression. He was so ashamed of it that he hid it from me and my brothers. A month later, he killed himself. The stigma that comes with mental illness made my Dad embarrassed to talk to his own kids about this problem because he felt like less of a man.
Erase the stigma. The more we talk about mental illness, the less likely it will end in suicide.

Please reblog.

A Good Day

Most of my online friends don’t know this about me, but it’s all I can do to get a shower most days. Just a shower, drying off, and getting dressed leaves me drained and in pain for hours. Now, add to that daily chores like cooking and doing dishes and Tylenol can’t even make a dent in my pain.

Today, thank You, God, is a good day. I’ve only been up for four hours or so, and I’ve cleaned the kitchen, living room (no small task on Mondays after my 5 year old nephew has spent the weekend), vacuumed the floors, made my bed, and gotten a good hot shower….with very little pain. Plus I have a small bit of energy still to spend. WooHoo!!!

All this to say:

We all have bad days. If we let them, they will make the good days even better. Find something in each day to smile about. I promise you I’m smiling right now.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Just So You Know Who You're Dealing With: Simple questions are getting harder to answer. →

roberthsims:

People are staggeringly gifted at making things more complicated than they need to be. Lately, I’ve noticed that simple questions, that only need a one word answer, cannot be answered simply by other people.

I work retail and in my store, if we do not have what you want in-store, then we can…
